This is our truth, tell us yours
According to Boris Johnson, a man who does a sketchy, sometimes almost plausible imitation of a politician, jihadis are wankers.
So am I Boris. I am so convinced of the prevalence of masturbation amongst the male population Boris that I’ll bet you are too.
So what’s the point of calling Jihadis wankers? Are you trying to belittle them Boris?
Ally Fogg, for whom we have much time had a go at criticizing Boris here, and a damned good job he made of it. However, I think he missed the point.
The idea that Jihadis, or IRA members in the 70s or 80s, were somehow inadequate, or weak, or perverted, is a persistent meme used by people who want to do anything except engage with ideas and ideology. Something makes normal, rational people adopt jihadi beliefs. Boris’s use of the wanker meme avoids thinking about that. Instead of exploring concepts of alienation and exclusion, Boris opts to reinforce the exclusion by counterposing his version of normality to the ‘weirdness’ of jihadis.
Boris, you, like me, and the majority of sexually active adult males, are a wanker. Unlike me, when you say it, you’re intent on making a bad situation worse, by making the public debate about the causes of terrorism more stupid, less nuanced and less useful. There’s a word for people who do that. Tory.
How better to close than with a quote from John Stuart Mill.
“Although it is not true that all conservatives are stupid people, it is true that most stupid people are conservative.” Boris, you tick all those boxes.
