Sometimes, it's just a cigar

This is our truth, tell us yours

A coalition of the opaque

Danny Alexander has revealed this morning what the Conservatives explored as options for welfare reform in 2012. That’s three years after the event. The details will be a surprise to most LibDems, never mind the rest of us.

At a stroke he’s reminded me, and us, of the best objection to coalition government, that it’s a behind the scenes process of exploration and negotiation, a Wizard of Oz production of munchkins like Nick Clegg gambolling and dancing for attention while behind the curtain sideshow hucksters pull levers and make deals.

The last thing we need, as a democracy, is another five years of coalition and lever puling behind the curtain; there’s a certain honesty to Ed Miliband’s refusal to do deals with the SNP in favour of survival vote by vote.
